Welcome to webpage of Dr. Majid Bastankhah

I am a fluid mechanic enthusiast who is passionate about renewables, particularly wind energy. I am currently an assistant professor in the Department of Engineering at Durham University, UK. In my research, I employ theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches to study aerodynamics of wind turbines and wind farms. My research aims at narrowing the gap between theory and practice, and it contributes towards addressing important wind-farm optimisation challenges that the wind energy industry currently faces. The main area of my expertise is to develop fast-running physics-based mathematical models to optimise the efficiency of wind farms and their complex interaction with atmospheric turbulent flows. The models developed in these works have received a great level of attention both in research and industry. They have been used by major wind energy companies such as Orsted, DNV, RWE and Siemens Gamesa, among others. Moreover, the developed models are implemented in several wind energy software packages such as FLORIS of NREL and PyWake of DTU. Apart from doing research, teaching is an important part of my academic career, and I enjoy teaching thermo-fluid courses and design new modules in both undergraduate and graduate levels. I am the Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and also the recipient of 2021 Teaching Prize awarded by Department of Engineering at Durham University.
